Nestled in Malheur National Forest, Delintment Lake is a peaceful retreat known for fishing and wildlife viewing situated in very serene shorelines. It’s an excellent choice for families seeking a less crowded escape.

One of the region’s most iconic destinations, Wallowa Lake offers stunning mountain scenery, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming and plenty of lakeside recreation. Arrive early during peak summer weekends to secure parking and find a great spot to enjoy calm waters then stay for all of the water fun sure as the sun reaches its peak.

For paddlers, Morgan Lake near La Grande provides a scenic setting for kayaking and canoeing, while Phillips Lake outside Baker City offers miles of shoreline and ample space to explore by paddlecraft.

Eastern Oregon’s rivers provide unforgettable scenery and recreation opportunities, but they also demand caution.

The John Day River, Snake River and Columbia River near Hat Rock State Park attract swimmers, anglers, boaters and paddlers throughout the summer. While these waterways can appear calm, strong currents, cold water temperatures and changing conditions can create hazards even for experienced swimmers so bring caution while enjoying the rivers’ flow. Before heading out, check local conditions, avoid swimming alone and always wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating, paddling or recreating near moving water. You don’t have a life jacket? We have you covered: check out Oregon’s Life Jacket Loaner Stations.

Traveling with young children? Eastern Oregon’s splash pads offer a perfect way to cool off during summer road trips.

The Willow Creek Water Park in Heppner provides a fun stop for families exploring Morrow County, while the Front Street Park in Boardman offers a refreshing break along the Columbia River corridor right off I-84. Both are ideal for letting kids burn off energy while parents enjoy a relaxing pause from the road.

So pack the sunscreen, grab the paddles and discover a new favorite place to cool off this season in Eastern Oregon.
